The bar has been raised Pixar, PDI (the CGI arm of Dreamworks Animation) has matched if not beaten Toy Story, Nemo and Monsters Inc.The same people who brought you Shrek return with Shrek 2 - the long awaited sequel that is as good as the first (which won the Oscar and put it in the modern day classic category when it came out).
We pick up the story as the last one finished, with Shrek and Fiona celebrating their marriage, along with Donkey and all in the ogre’s swamp. The happy couple are invited to Fiona’s regal parents to share the news in Far Far Away Land. Corruption and deceit follow as Fiona’s father (The King) strikes a deal with the Fairy Godmother to replace Shrek with her son Prince Charming. With the help of Donkey and new aide Puss In Boots (An assassin sent to kill Shrek) they fight to win back Fiona from the hands of Charming, Godmother and all her magic potions.
This has it all, it is possibly the best sequel ever made. It is so funny but touching, (sincere too) and above all there is a great story told so well. The script is first class as the writers have really developed the characters but I am sure people who haven’t seen the first (is there anyone left?) could watch this and not feel confused.
Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Antonio Banderas and Jennifer Saunders are exceptional and deliver their best work to date, whilst Julie Andrews, Rupert Everett, Cameron Diaz and John Cleese aren’t bad either! Each portrays their character with great fun and believability that they jump off the screen at you!
This film is a work of genius with no faults to report, the direction, animation, use of colour and soundtrack is superb. Is it the film of the summer? It may well be! It could even be the film of the year…
Shrek 3 and 4 are due to follow and with the potential $billions at stake you can see this is the only way forward with animation.
Gush, gush, gush – This reviewer can’t recommend it highly enough…
GO AND SEE IT!
