Good film this, one that will get more popular with age. Premise - a bunch of strangers are stranded up at a motel, its dark, its rainy and people are getting bumped off in alarming fashion… nothing original in that…or is there. There are a couple of things that make this stand out from the crop of psychological thrillers. One is the constant surprises and intelligent writing that crops up throughout, throwing the audience off on tangents. The other is the effort that is put into the film by all the talented actors involved - they really draw you into the dangerous situation.
Everyone is a suspect as, one by one, the residents are bumped off in succession of the room number that they are staying in. This adds to the tension as each victim can literally see their own death coming.
It also draws a comparison to another good, modern psychological horror - Final Destination - in that respect.
The deaths are imaginative and it's fun to try and keep up with the clues, involving us in the story as we try to figure out who the real killer is. And then just when we think we know… well, you'll just have to watch it.
There are only two things that mar the film for me. One is an overlong ending that seems to be over… then over... then over… It's effective but annoying also. The other is the awful trailer campaign that actually gave away the main twist?? Why?? We will never know.
Just call me T.J. Mackey.
