1. Blade – the opening scene in the abattoir inspired me to turn to my good friend Brundlefly and say “I am gonna f***ing love this film”…and I did. Great for so many things, and even Dorff comes out of it well.2. Road to Perdition – as TJ points out, it is a graphic novel, and it was a great film. Totally screwed over by Miramax for Oscars, the film will stand the test of time nevertheless, and it looks beautiful – gangster hats off to the late, great Conrad Hall.
3. Batman – If only for Jack Nicholson who dominated the film. Praises for Keaton though, who could have screwed a huge role up, but most people were satisfied, and rightly so. Only blot? Jerry Hall as the Phantom of the Opera…
4. The Matrix – another graphic novel one, but worth it’s salt for re-inventing fight sequences that would be aped for many a year after it (and still is – Equilibrium anyone?). Keanu’s not that good, but you’re not watching it for him, and it is possibly the purest comic strip film, as the way it’s shot and cut is like speed-reading a graphic novel whilst on a speed inducing narcotic. Can’t think of the name of said drug though.
5. Mask of Zorro – I know Superman should be in this spot, but I would rather watch Zorro again than Superman – and pipe down capesters, I am looking forward to the remake/franchise, it’s just I think the memory of Superman should stay just that and not be tarnished by watching and comparing to today’s quality of fx – point taken though TJ. Yes, Banderas can be over the top, and Hopkins doesn’t look Mexican, but it’s the passion and charm that comes through. And if it wasn’t for her break in Zorro, Catherine Zeta Jones would never have met Michael Douglas and acted out scenes from Basic Instinct together…
