I. SupermanII. Spider-man
III. Superman 2
IV. X Men
V. Batman (1989)
Dick Donners’ Superman is an amazing achievement: possibly the best superhero story ever told. From witnessing the destruction of Krypton, and then Clark Kent’s journey from farm boy to superhero, never before have I seen a movie such as this told with such majesty and respect for its source material as this. Christopher Reeve is Superman; previously nothing more than a soap actor, (Sorry Steve McFadden) in my mind there will never be anyone better. No one in whatever remake that may happen will make an appearance and play the mild mannered Clark Kent or the ‘man of steel’ himself with more conviction, subtlety or dignity.
Getting a bit a$$ kissy? What are you gonna do about it?
Spider-man, again was just told with so much passion and respect for the material that it couldn’t fail at the box office. One of my childhood favourites (My first film at the cinema was ‘Spiderman Strikes Back’; a double bill with ‘Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger’-cool eh?), the love is all there on the screen. Once more a rarity in this field - when the original story, (in this case the better half of the picture), is done just right.
Without going off on one again I’ll sum up Superman 2 in one sentence-“kneel son of Jor-El!!” I’ll let you work out the rest.
X Men was the one that has kick started a whole new renaissance in bringing our comic book heroes to screen after the whole ‘Batman & Robin’ debacle. This was the first movie of its kind for a number of years that wasn’t afraid to take itself seriously, whilst still not forgetting to make it fun. Without Singer’s vision and respect of the subject we may not have got ‘Spider-man’, we might have missed out on ‘Hulk’ and I think we certainly wouldn’t have had ‘Daredevil’.
1989… We had one great frickin’ Summer, we had the disappointing, but still, at least in my twisted mind, ‘Ghostbusters 2’, we got ‘Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade’ and we were presented with the unique vision that was Tim Burton’s Batman. I’m sure Warner’s were pi$$in’ in their finely pressed pants, but Burton’s dark twist on the Dark Knight, Keaton’s brooding antihero and of course Nicholson’s show stopping turn as The Joker brought us the final entry in Brundlefly's top 5 comic book adaptations of all time.
Brett Ratner sucks…
Hulk smash!!
