1. The Man with Two Brains – Steve Martin WAS a comical genius and, at the time – he was the only one who could pull off the mad antics of Dr Huffphurrurrphurrurr (forgive me if that is not spelt right). An absolutely ridiculous film that is charming, sexy and downright insane, but with a huge laugh factor throughout. I must have watched it hundreds of times as a kid. As far as physical comedy goes – this is the top of my list.2. The Life of Brian – If we were to be honest – Python are hit and miss. They blow hot and cold, but with Brian they nailed every single frame. Proving that they were not only great comedians, but were also pretty deft with a film camera. Causing riots when it was released for all the right and wrong reasons, it’s the most quoted and beloved Python film (yet, strangely also the most accessible). No other religious comedy can come close (save for the Passion??).
3. Waiting For Guffman – Would ‘The Office’ really have been made without Guest and his friends inventing the Mockumentary format? Probably not, and this is the best of the bunch in my opinion. Huge slices of Pathos that keep the audience wondering if the characters of Blane (famous for their Stools!) will actually make it to their opening night – and if the infamous Guffman will actually turn up? It is both tearjerking and tearachingly funny in equal amounts. Guests character Corky is a classic of acting genius.
4. Dumb and Dumber –Not a huge one for the farcical fart jokes, but this one had me snotting into my popcorn on release day. I wasn’t ready for how funny this would be. And possibly the only Jim Carrey comedy that has not been ruined by the trailer showing ALL the funniest moments? Daniels and Carrey are a winning combo (and to think that Gary Oldman was one of the first choices?)
5. Roxanne– I think this was about the day that I realised what intelligent comedy was – a film that was strong on story and script, the comedy a secondary vehicle that compliments the love story. Martin on top form again (before the Bilco era). And the amazingly beautiful Hannah as Roxanne. The scene where he has to insult a bully in a packed pub is brilliant – and he can kick ass too. You could almost feel bullied victims cheering the world around as Martin was knocking people over with his moves and words.
