David Croft and Jeremy Lloyd's sitcom 'Allo 'Allo started life in 1982 as a modest one-off spoof of the classic 1970s drama series Secret Army. A throwback to an earlier era during the 1980s heyday of alternative comedy, the show's decidedly un-PC mix of bedroom farce and crudely drawn national stereotypes was subsequently stretched over nine series in all (1984-1992), making it TV's successor to the long-running Carry On series. 'Allo 'Allo was not only similarly preoccupied with seaside postcard humour, it was also blessed with a cracking ensemble cast (including Carry On veteran Kenneth Connor) whose sheer energy eked out comic gold from even the laziest jokes about humourless Germans, cowardly Italians, "Tally ho!" Brits and onion-selling Frenchmen. Like Croft & Lloyd's Are You Being Served, it was the cast interaction more than the material itself that produced the laughs.

Gordon Kaye deserves much of the credit for keeping the show fresh. Whether he's plotting with the sexy Resistance leader, in cahoots with the Nazi commandant about a priceless painting of "The Fallen Madonna with the Big Boobies", or fending off the attentions of sex-starved waitresses under the withering gaze of his wife Edith, bumbling Rene is the lynchpin around which the endless farce revolves. Despite its determination never to vary the formula from week to week, the show had at least one virtue--it wasn't afraid to offend anyone. --Mark Walker

One of the best comedies of the 1970s, Blake Edwards' ode to midlife crisis and the hazards of infidelity now plays like a valentine to that self-indulgent decade, and it's still as funny as it ever was. In the signature role of his career (along with Arthur), Dudley Moore plays a songwriter with a severe case of marital restlessness, and all it takes is a chance encounter with Bo Derek (in her screen debut) to jump-start his libido. Julie Andrews plays Moore's wife, who will only tolerate so much of her husband's desperate need to reaffirm his sexual vitality, while Moore pursues Derek to a tropical rendezvous. In teen comedy 100 Girls, self-described "tragically glib" college freshman Jonathan Tucker finds true love in a girls' dorm elevator during a blackout, but when he forgets to get her name he has 100 suspects to sift through, one by one. It may sound like the premise of just another teen sex farce, but writer-director Michael Davis makes it the starting point of the boy's getting of wisdom. Amiable young star Tucker brings an excited and endearing innocence to his journey, and Emmanuelle Chriqui is a delight as the "promiscuous" girl who teaches him a thing or three about crippling stereotypes. Larisa Oleynik, Jaime Pressly, Marissa Ribisi and Katherine Heigl are just a few of the other girls who help him along. 100 Girls is a refreshingly frank, funny and sexy exploration of the dynamics of young men and women and the power of first impressions, reputations and expectations. --Sean Axmaker
